Workshops

1. 8 Principals of Developing Compelling Characters

Don't let a "dead head" hold you back from excellence. Let's face it. A puppet character sells to an audience when it's fully alive. When the audience can see the "wheels turning" in your pal's head or identifies with your character's thinking strategies, the audience is hooked. Leave this workshop with 8 timeless principals that can take your ventriloquism and kick it up a notch.

2. Voice Characterisation - Distant Voice, Phone Voice, Muffled Voice

Want to turn your ventriloquism performances into a rich experience for you and your audiences? Master these voices. Come hear and watch how you can create the distant, phone and muffled voices. Step away from ho-hum dialog to wowing your audiences and building suspense about how in the world you do that!

Sam Sutherland (UK) Sam Sutherland (UK)

Sam Sutherland is the manager for the Hubble Community Enterprise based in Camberley, Surrey.

Predominantly using puppets, the Enterprise runs after school clubs, one day puppet workshops in schools, holiday clubs, school assemblies and specialist work.

The Enterprise is a secular run organisation bridging gaps in the community, enabling young people to gain confidence in finding their voice, giving them choice, by the sharing of knowledge, culture and values.

Workshops:

1. Obtaining Grants for Communities and Schools

This workshop will give you information on how to take Jesus into the community in a secular way, to gain grants and the know how of where to go and what to put on the application form. The language we use is the important difference between a yes and a no.

To gain an understanding of what government views as most important and then how to reach and help those people in your community.

My aim is to inspire you to take puppetry out to the community and then through that start or grow your church puppet team.

Since running this workshop, those have attended have felt inspired to get out in a new way and have been successful in grant application.

My Enterprise has been running for nearly three years and in that time we have been able to reach out to hundreds of young people and adults. Come along and see how this can be done.

2. Working with young people with special needs in schools and community

Puppetry is a wonderful resource to use with special needs or those suffering from emotional and behavioural problems. Because puppets once remove the person from themselves it frees them up to express themselves in a new way.

This workshop will give you ways and ideas to help you to achieve this in the classroom and/or community setting. I have worked with young people from all walks of life, emotional, physical problems, autistic young people, down syndrome and ADHD. In my experience these young people have benefited hugely through the work with puppets. I will share that with you and aid you to be able to achieve this in your school/church or community setting.

Workshops:

1. Ask the Animals and They Will Teach You:

Do you need ideas for the children’s talk? Have you got animal puppets and don’t know what to use them for? In this workshop we will see how Scriptural truths can be brought alive by using the characteristics of animals represented by our puppets.

Peter Hellyer (UK) Peter Hellyer (UK)

Peter Hellyer is an established One Way UK workshop leader of many years. A children’s pastor for over 30 years Peter now performs and teaches puppetry nationally and internationally. A writer and broadcaster, Peter has written a number of publications for One Way UK, as well as many puppet scripts. He is responsible for writing the One Way UK Daily Devotionals. Peter has been married to Diane for over 40 years and has three sons (all are puppeteers) and two grandsons. She and Peter live in West Sussex.

Workshops:

1. The Purpose Driven Team - Keeping our feet on the ground and our eyes on God

A puppet team can never go beyond its vision, be successful without unity, or prosper without prayer. This workshop is a must for those seeking a vision for their puppetry, the development of their team and an effective ministry in the Church and community. This workshop draws together practical and spiritual matters to show how a solid foundation can be laid to enable puppet teams to move successfully with purpose as a group offering a strong Christian witness.

2. Creative Writing - Audience, material, action!

Release the creativity that God placed within you and discover the principles that can help you create effective scripts for your puppet team. This seminar will give techniques to help you prepare scripts and survive the creative process with a smile, as well as including ways in which ideas can be developed.

3. Bringing your puppet to life! (with Diane Hellyer)

Manipulating a puppet is one thing but bringing it to life is quite another! This seminar will demonstrate how we can add life to a puppet so that it becomes a believable character rather than an automaton. Learn how to “be the puppet” and give expression to your puppet – and enter the emotional challenge – if you dare!

4. Object lessons

Not all of us have the confidence to use illusions when teaching or sharing the Gospel. However, we can take ordinary objects or toys (plus a few less usual but easily obtainable items) and turn them into practical, concrete, fun examples to illustrate spiritual truths in a memorable, material way. That's object lessons - the material making real the spiritual. Ideal for children and adults, object lessons can provide a fascinating introduction, interval or summing up of a puppet performance, as well as in Sunday School, all-age services, club nights etc. They are great for audience participation too! Come and get equipped to help others understand.
