Great British Summer Resources - Part 2
1. Introduction
Many people in the UK and around the world will be holding or joining in
with the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend. Whether
you are involved with these, the Olympic Torch Relay or the Olympic and
Paralympic games over the summer, there will be many opportunities in school
assemblies, church services, holiday clubs and community events to present a gospel
message that is topical to the events taking place.
In Part 2 of this mini series we will give you some more useful ideas and help on
programmes and performance to encourage you to get involved and present a
programme that is both appropriate and relevant to the main theme.
Programmes:
If you can find a strong song or sketch that really fits in well with the
theme that is ideal. Often, we have to put a programme together that meets a
number of different needs eg content and message, appropriate for the age group
and will work in the location where the performance is to take place eg in
church or outside at a community event.
A puppet or person talking to a puppet can interact in between the songs to
help get the message across which also gives the team time to prepare for the
next item in the programme. See Part 1 for more information on performing
outside at open air events.
Resource suggestions:
This
month’s FREE Script -
"Daniel and the Marathon"
This great sketch is easy to use and adapt to your own situation. Giving a
strong message on how prepare and train for an event we are reminded how we need
to take the challenge seriously if we are to be successful.
Brit
Skits – "What’s on the inside"
This is a short skit where two boys are picking
their football team. They pick their team only based on outside appearances and
end up losing as the other team

RPM
Vol.6 – "Put me in coach"
Ready to use talents for the Lord
Sunday
School Rock – "We’re Serving God Together"
Good message for
teamwork with the emphasis on it being not about me but all about the whole
team.

Beyond
Words Vol. 1 - "Run the Race"
A great skit with out any words but
with a very powerful message.
Object
Talks for Any Day
Talk on Teamwork.
  Edible
Object Talks that Teach about Values
Talks about values and positive
attitudes.
Scruffs Antics Vol.
3
Talk on World Cup but adapt it to the European Cup.
Beyond
Gold
Whole 45 minute musical with an Olympic theme.
If the sketch doesn’t exactly fit the occasion or your team as written, amend
it so that it better fits the current event and/or your own teams size and
abilities.
A sketch with 2 parts can be done with 2 puppets, a person and a puppet using
vent or the whispering technique, or a person outside the stage and a puppet.
The material you use can pick up and relate to the particular sports or events
i.e.
Hurdles – Objects in the way you
need to overcome
Sprint – Complete 100% focus for
short time
Relay – Team work with the end
result being dependent on the whole teams effort
Rowing - Team working together to
achieve the best
Marathon – Long haul, perseverance,
stamina, encouragement from each other and crowd
High Jump – Passing the test,
clearing the bar, has to be possible in your mind
Discus – Focus, timing and direction
altogether
Sailing – Keeping on course using
the wind to help you not misdirect you
Archery – On target – Balance
keeping your eyes fixed ahead trusting your feet
Or, relate to the physical and mental preparation and practice undertaken by
the athlete’s/teams i.e.
Training – The commitment and dedication required
Discipline – Keeping on keeping on
Encouragement – The need for encouragement of others in team and particularly
if it is a solo sport
Good
coach – Having good advice and following it
Mental
preparation – The belief that you can do it, can win and the desire to do it
Team
sports – It isn’t just about you it’s everyone together
Why not think about how the above points may apply to yourself, your team or
your group?
In
the Olympics there is just one winner of the gold medal for each event. But, it
is also about participating, about being there and doing your best to achieve
your best.
There
are lots of lessons here we can use, learn from and share. Do this in such a
way so that we can inspire and encourage each other and also others to do their
best and achieve their God given potential.
