Winning Gold
Puppets: Boy, girl and a colourful bird.
Boy comes up with bird and is making a fuss of the bird. The
girl appears.
Girl: That’s
a strange looking bird? What sort of bird is it? (Bird squawks)
Boy: It’s a racing pigeon.
Girl: A racing pigeon? (Bird squawks)
Boy: Yes, a racing pigeon
and it’s going to win me a medal!
(Pats the bird. Bird squawks)
Girl: But
it does not look like a racing pigeon.
Boy: What do you mean; he
does not look like a racing pigeon?
(Pats the bird. Bird squawks)
Girl: Well
he’s the wrong shape.
Boy: What do you mean the
wrong shape? He’s a lovely shape. (Bird
preens itself)
Girl: Well
he’s the wrong colour.
Boy: What do you mean the
wrong colour? He’s absolutely beautiful! I don’t think you know much about
racing pigeons! (Bird squawks and
disappears)
Girl: I
don’t know about racing pigeons. (In a disbelieving voice and giggles)
Boy: Do you remember the
story about Jesus and the little man?
Girl: Jesus and the little
man? Do you mean the story of Zacchaeus?
Boy: That' right. Long
ago Jesus visited Zacchaeus’ home town and lots of people came out to see him.
But when Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus people were in his way. They were all
taller than him and they would not let him in front of them. All he could see
were their backs.
Girl: Oh dear, what did he
do so he could see Jesus?
Boy: He climbed a tree.
Girl: Wow, I wish I could
climb trees.
Boy: Anyway when Jesus
came by, Zacchaeus was up the tree and Jesus saw him and asked him to join him
for lunch. People were surprised because Zacchaeus was not a nice man.
Girl: Oh oh I know this...
He was a cheat, no one likes cheats!
Boy: That’s right but
because Jesus made him feel special and loved, even though he was little and
even though he was not nice, Zacchaeus changed and stopped cheating. Zacchaeus even
began to share all his things with others. (Bird
squawks and reappears)
Girl: What’s
this got to do with your so called racing pigeon?
Boy: Well Jesus taught us
that no matter what shape you are, big or small, round or thin – he loves you.
No matter what colour you are, he loves you. Everyone is special and in God’s
book we are all winners.
Girl: Oh
I think I see now.
Boy: It does not matter
what my bird looks like, I love him (Bird
squawks and snuggles up to him) and so he will always be a winner in my
eyes.
Girl: So we are all
winners in God’s eyes. We don’t have to win races to get God’s gold medal, just
be loving to each other?
Boy: You got it now! (They both cuddle the bird who squawks)
